Redeemer School

Mentors

The definition of a "mentor" according to Webster is "a trusted counselor or guide." While in most cases, Redeemer School has not personally consulted with these mentors, we have carefully studied their educational philosophies and drawn from them to formulate our own mission, values and distinctives. We consider the philosophies represented by these individuals (& institutions) to be foundational to our own educational philosophy. As we carry out the mission of Redeemer School, each of these mentors does help guide us:

Charlotte Mason

The life and work of Miss Mason (encapsulated in her 6 volume Home School series), provides us with a foundation for viewing education as a lifelong learning process. Through her core philosophies of education as an atmosphere, a discipline, a life, and a science of relationships, we are guided in how to respect and teach children as individuals and image-bearers of Christ. Our curriculum and instructional methods are informed by her ideals of "living books," nature study, narration, and fine arts, among others.

Susan Schaeffer MacAulay

The daughter of the late Francis Schaeffer, Ms. Schaeffer MacAulay is also the co-founder of English L'Abri and founder of Child Light. In her book For the Children's Sake, she has aptly and succinctly summarized Charlotte Mason's ideas on education. This book is required reading for all prospective Redeemer School families.

Ted Tripp

Through his book, Shepherding a Child's Heart, Mr. Tripp has provided Redeemer School with a framework for an "inside out" approach to discipline which focuses on the heart condition of the child rather than merely the outward behavior of the child. This book is also required reading for all prospective Redeemer School families.

Perimeter School

This Georgia-based school inspired the inception of Redeemer School, and its curriculum specifically influenced the formation of the Redeemer School curriculum. A network of schools in Georgia, The Perimeter School Association, continues to be a valuable resource to Redeemer School's continuing development.

Diane Lopez

Through her work, Teaching Children, Ms. Lopez has provided us with a creative curricular paradigm, which naturally integrates a Christian worldview and Scriptural principles. These ideas have, in particular, influenced the books used in the Redeemer School curriculum.

Dorothy Sayers

Through her essay The Lost Tools of Learning, Ms. Sayers has summarized the classical learning process. Redeemer School has sought to integrate the classical methods and materials which have significantly influenced the books and progression used in the Redeemer School curriculum.

Douglas Wilson

Dr. Wilson is a pastor as well as founder of the Logos School in Idaho. Redeemer School has not only been influenced by the Logos School, but also by Dr. Wilson's book Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning.
